Thoseghar waterfall – Amazing Monsoon Getaway Near Pune & Mumbai

Nature is the biggest artist!! One such artistic creation of nature can be seen at Thoseghar village in Satara which houses a gigantic waterfall popularly known as motha dhabdhaba ( big waterfall). Located at the edge of Konkan region, Thoseghar is a seasonal waterfall whose magic can be seen only in monsoon.

The water falls through a series of cascade from a height of 350 meters. The height is disputable between 350 meters to 500 meters. This waterfall falls among the category of biggest waterfall in Maharashtra mainly due to its height.

The area of the Thoseghar waterfall is maintained by government of Maharashtra along with the forest department of Satara. The timing for the waterfall is from 8 A.M. to 6 P.M. Upon reaching the waterfall there is ample place for car parking. The parking charges are nominal with Rs. 5 for 2 and 3 wheeler, Rs. 10 for 4 wheeler and Rs. 20 for heavy vehicles. There is an entry fee of Rs. 10 per person for the waterfall.

At the entry get there is a sign board indicating that there are two waterfall in the vicinity namely motha dhabdhaba (big waterfall) and chota dhabdhaba (small waterfall). From the entry gate to reach the waterfall you have to walk for approximately 2 to 5 minutes to reach the motha waterfall i.e. actual Thoseghar waterfall. While you cover this distance between you and the waterfall you get the pleasure to hear the sound of the water pounding on the rocks. The sound make you eager to see the magnificent waterfall.

The sight of waterfall is magical. You get to see the water swishing over the rocks joyfully. It thunders down into a pool like a gigantic water spout. When the water topples into the pool, it foams at the bottom and creates water drizzle like appearances. The pool appears green in color maybe due to the reflection of surrounding greenery. The entire region is covered with lush green trees. The scene is a picturesque!!

You also get to watch different variety of flowers and butterfly in the region. The chota dhabdhaba (small waterfall) is at a distance of 5 minutes’ walk from the actual Thoseghar waterfall (bada dhabdhaba). This chota dhabdhaba is also worth watching. There is a small stall selling corns in the premises. It’s fun eating the corn in the cold weather. There are a few small restaurants outside the waterfall premises for tourist.

The waterfall is easily accessible from Pune and Mumbai. Located at a distance of 141 km from Pune and 294 km from Mumbai, Thoseghar has turned out to be a famous picnic spot known for its scenic, calm and quiet nature. Visitors from all over the Maharashtra visit this magnificent waterfall.

Sajjangarh fort, Kaas plateau, Kaas Lake and Vajrai waterfall are other tourist points that can be covered while you visit the Thoseghar waterfall.

  • Sajjangard fort is the final resting place of Sant Ramdas and is on the road to Thoseghar.
  • Kaas plateau is located at a distance of 42.8 km from Thoseghar.  It is a heritage site having 850 different species of flowering plants and is a must visit.
  • Kaas Lake lies ahead to Kaas plateau on the same road. It is a picturesque location.
  • Ahead on the same road you find an entry to Vajrai waterfall which is supposed to be India’s tallest waterfall is a perfect place for trekking.

Once you cross the city you come across a tunnel. The road before the tunnel goes to Kaas plateau and the road after crossing the tunnel goes to Thoseghar waterfall.
