Pune boasts a culturally rich history intertwined with the legacies of Shivaji Maharaj and the Peshwas, conceals a hidden gem in the heart of Baner – the Baneshwar Cave Temple. Having recently made Pune our home, we sought to explore the serene Shiva temple on an auspicious Shravani Somvar (Monday). Amidst the urban hustle, the Baneshwar Cave Temple stands gracefully at the foothills of Tukai Hill, beckoning seekers of tranquility.

Unraveling the Mysteries of Time:

Legend whispers tales of the Pandavas seeking solace in the Baneshwar Cave Temple nearly 5,000 years ago during their exile. However, an alternative narrative threads its history back to the Rashtrakut dynasty, a distant 2,500 years in the past. The true origin of this sacred space remains veiled in the enigma of time, inviting those curious enough to delve into its mysteries.

Journey to the Baneshwar Cave Temple:

Nestled at the base of Tukai Hill, the Baneshwar cave temple required a climb of approximately 250 steps from Baner gaon. The temple has a natural spring which occasionally floods the temple, adding to the temple’s allure. Aptly termed a Swayambhu (‘Svayam’ means self or voluntarily and ‘bhu’ means springing or arising) temple, Baneshwar cave temple encapsulates the essence of ‘arising on its own,’ a testament to its inherent divinity.

Baneshwar’s Identity

Baneshwar, a synonym for Lord Shiva, once housed a Swayambhu shivling, now replaced due to natural deterioration. The temple trustee took the initiative to replace the aging shivling with a new one, preserving the sanctity of the divine space.

Guardians of Time

Within the temple’s confines, Virgals, ancient victory pillars, silently bear witness to warriors’ valor, prayers to Lord Shiva, and the poignant depictions of a warrior’s transcendence to heaven. These Virgals are in bad condition and hence are carefully enclosed in glass cases to shield them from further wear, prompting contemplation on the tales etched in stone.
